First Time I Ever Heard

We’ve all experienced it—that moment when you hear a performer or a recording for the very first time and everything changes. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, but nothing is quite the same after. For pop music lovers and scholars, these moments are often not just memorable but transformative.

We are asking to hear about something that knocked your musical universe off its axis. Contributions to this series may span from the deeply personal to the broadly sociological, from the most recent of experiences to memories from long ago, and all manner of musical practice. Topics might focus on a single song, a whole record, concert, even a genre, format, or musical tradition.
