We’ve all experienced it—that moment when you hear a band or musician for the very first time and everything changes. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, but nothing is quite the same after. These experiences come in all sorts of varieties, from the opening act you never expected to love to the singer everyone was talking about to the song that didn’t even make sense but was unshakable nonetheless.
For pop music lovers and scholars, these moments aren’t just memorable but often transformative. The IASPM-US website (iaspm-us.net) would like to hear about the first time you heard something that knocked your musical universe off its axis, even if only for a moment. The form in which you write may vary, but we’re looking for entries of roughly 1000-1600 words that respond creatively to your experiences, relating what it was about this music that shook you the way it did.
Send your submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org, and be sure to include the phrase “First Time I Heard” in the subject line. Deadline for submissions is July 31st, 2012, and the series will run on the website in August and September. We welcome queries and encourage creative approaches to writing that take advantage of the media possibilities on the site.
